Briar Hill, Calgary is a well-established, inner-city neighborhood in the northwest part of the city. Because the community was built on an escarpment above Hillhurst and West Hillhurst, it offers amazing views of the Rockies to the west and the downtown area to the south. Briar Hill was annexed by the City of Calgary in 1906 and has a rich history. Most of the homes in Briar Hill were built between the 1950s and 1970s, and their architectural styles are reflective of it. The area was once a part of the Riley homestead, which was settled in the late 1880s by Thomas Riley and his wife Georgina Hounsfield Riley.

Highlights of Living in Briar Hill, Calgary

Briar Hill is characterized by its lovely homes, quiet streets, stunning views, and convenient location near downtown Calgary. Several of Calgaryís major institutions, including the McMahon Stadium, Foothills Athletic Park, Alberta College of Art, and University of Calgary, are situated near Briar Hill. Furthermore, there is an elementary school located within the community itself.

Many residents choose to live in Briar Hill because of its highly desirable location. Itís connected to major roads, making both commutes downtown and weekend trips to the Rockies convenient. North Hill Shopping Centre, the Lions Park Light Rail Transit station, and SAIT are also nearby. Although the neighborhood itself is quiet, there are many restaurants and nightclubs on 16th Avenue that are popular with young professionals and university students.


The majority of homes in Briar Hill are single detached family homes and semi-detached homes, but there are also some condominiums and townhomes available in the area. Prices for Briar Hill single family homes range from just under $500,000 to up to $3.5 million, while prices for condos range from around $200,000 to over $1 million.

Community Facilities

Recently, Briar Hill and the neighboring community of Hounsfield Heights acquired a new community centre. The Hounsfield Heights-Briar Hill Community Association is housed within this community centre, sharing it with the local fire department and police. The community centre features a gymnasium that is used for basketball, badminton, soccer, martial arts, and womenís self defense classes. Thereís also an outdoor skating rink available to residents in the winter. Expansions of the community centre are planned and will include a youth activity space, common area, storage space, and more. At Briar Hill Elementary School, the community association hosts a playgroup and community kindergarten.
