Britannia is a small, circular, and stylish neighborhood in southwest Calgary that has a strong British influence. Everything from the landscaping and architecture to the street names, such as Elizabeth Road and Coronation Drive, conjures up images of Great Britain.

Britannia, Calgary is largely a residential area with an affluent population of approximately 800 people. The median household income in Britannia is $120,387. The neighborhood is bordered by 50th Avenue to the south, Britannia Drive to the north, and Elbow Drive to the east. To the west, Britannia borders on parkland that slopes to the Elbow River. Britannia is known for possessing one of the largest collections of mid-century, modern residential architecture in Calgary.

Britannia is a well-established Calgary neighborhood that was annexed in 1910, but it wasn’t developed extensively until the 1950s. It was the first high-end community built in Calgary after World War II.

In terms of sustainability, diversity, and aesthetics, Britannia boasts a superior design. Its homes are modern, stylish, and exude mid-century charm. Even though most of the homes have undergone a facelift since they were first built, they still maintain their high quality design and aesthetic. Britannia, Calgary also has an abundance of green space, as builders have strived to maintain the natural surroundings.

Life in Britannia

The homes in the hilltop neighborhood of Britannia are mostly single family executive homes that offer spectacular views of the city, the Rocky Mountains, and the Elbow River Valley. Britannia is approximately four kilometers south of downtown Calgary, which can be accessed easily via Elbow Drive. There are plenty of amenities to enjoy in the area, as well, such as restaurants, shops, the Lindsay Park Sports Centre, and the Glencoe Club.


Britannia is a quaint community that is popular with outdoor enthusiasts because of its proximity to River Park, Crescent Park, Stanley Park, the Calgary Golf and Country Club, and the city’s pathway system. Residents of Britannia, Calgary also have access to a skating rink and sports field. If you ever feel like grabbing a movie, simply go downtown, where you’ll be able to choose from six different theatres.


In Britannia, Calgary, there’s a small, upscale shopping center known as Britannia Plaza. Britannia Plaza is home to a hair salon, bookstore, shoe store, and market, among other shops. In addition, the neighborhood’s close to the city’s core, so you don’t have to travel far to do more extensive shopping.
