Cliff Bungalow, Calgary is an inner-city neighborhood located in the southwest quadrant of the city. The community, which has a population of around 2,000, was annexed by the City of Calgary in 1906 and developed in 1907. Cliff Bungalow, Calgary has a rich history. It was established in 1907, but the name “Cliff Bungalow” was not used until the 1970s. In the 1870s, before the land was annexed by the City of Calgary, it was owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1935, the area was rezoned to permit the building of high density residential buildings, and the neighborhood’s character changed as a result. In 1990, Cliff Bungalow and the neighboring community of Mission were combined to preserve the area, which was under pressure for development. In the 1990s, the area was rejuvenated, thanks to the city’s renewed interest in the neighborhood’s history and architecture.


Cliff Bungalow, Calgary is bounded by Elbow River to the south, Uptown 17th Avenue to the north, 4th Street to the east, and the Mission area to the west. The Cliff Bungalow-Mission Community Association regularly hosts special events and is credited with creating the annual 4th Street Lilac Festival, the largest street festival in Calgary. The association also helps to guide the development of the area by preventing the construction of buildings over three stories high and limiting the neighborhood’s density.
