Located in Calgaryís northwest, Hounsfield Heights is one of the oldest communities in the city. The area was subdivided and annexed in 1906, but it wasnít established as a neighborhood until 1953. Hounsfield Heights is named after Georgina Hounsfield Riley, who first settled there with her husband Thomas Riley and their children in 1888. Their home, which was called the Hounsfield Lodge, was situated where Bethany Care Centre is now located.


Hounsfield Heights, Calgary is located on a natural escarpment, so it offers stunning views of downtown Calgary and the Rockies. The community is situated north of Hillhurst and West Hillhurst. It is bounded by 16th Avenue N (Trans Canada Highway) to the north; 14th Street W to the east; 8th Avenue N to the south; and 12th Avenue N, Juniper Road, Crowchild Trail, 22nd Street W to the west. Hounsfield Heights is located close to major transportation routes, so you can access the downtown area or the Rockies with ease. The Lions Park C-Train station is also located within the community.

Real Estate

The real estate in Hounsfield Heights, Calgary mostly consists of single family homes, but there are also low-rise and high-rise condominiums and townhomes in the area. In addition, the neighborhood features some semi-detached homes, which were built between the 1950s and 1970s. Nearly 80% of the residents in Hounsfield Heights are homeowners. Prices for single family homes start at just under $500,000 and reach up to $3.5 million. Condo prices start at approximately $200,000 and reach up to $1 million.


Hounsfield Heights, Calgary is a quiet neighborhood, but itís located near the North Hill Shopping Centre, as well as several nightclubs and restaurants along 16th Avenue and in Motel Village. Major institutions located near Hounsfield Heights, Calgary include the Jubilee Auditorium, McMahon Stadium, Alberta College of Art, SAIT, and the University of Calgary. The area is served by Briar Hill Elementary School. A community playgroup and kindergarten also meet up at the elementary school.

Recreational Facilities

Hounsfield Heights, Calgary is home to a new, state-of-the-art community centre that features a gymnasium. Programs offered at the gymnasium include womenís self defense, summer basketball, martial arts, indoor soccer, and seniorís badminton. Recreational facilities near Hounsfield Heights include Foothills Athletic Park on Crowchild Trail, which features soccer fields, a baseball diamond, a running track, long jump pits, a pole vault, and more.
