Killarney, also known as Killarney-Glengarry, is a residential neighborhood located in southwest Calgary. Killarney, Calgary is a historical community
where the first subdivision plan was registered in 1906. The area was formally annexed by the City of Calgary in 1910.
Prior to World War II, development in Killarney, Calgary was fairly slow and real estate consisted mostly of one-story clapboard structures. During the
post-war era, small stucco and clapboard bungalows were built on 25-foot and 50-foot-wide lots. Since 2002, developers have been gradually replacing
these old structures with low to medium-density infill homes.
Killarney, Calgary is bounded by 17th Avenue SW to the north, 37th Street SW to the west, Richmond Road SW to the south, and 25A Street SW to the
east. Killarney is located near several major transportation routes, thus allowing for quick commutes to the downtown area and other parts of the city. At
the time of writing, the LRT is being extended in the south, west of 17th Avenue, so public transportation will become more accessible to Killarney
There are currently just over 1,800 single family homes and around 755 condos located in Killarney, Calgary. Prices for single family homes start at
$400,000, while prices for condos start at $200,000. Killarney has a home ownership rate of over 65%. Homes range from cute pre-war and post-war
bungalows to ranchers, executive homes, high rises, and condos.
There has been commercial development in Killarney, Calgary, particularly along 17th Avenue SW. Nearby shopping venues include Westbrook Mall and
Westhills Shopping Centre, the latter of which is home to a movie theatre. There are a number of public and private schools in and near Killarney,
including the bilingual Holy Name Elementary and Killarney Elementary. In addition, the main campus of Mount Royal College is located just immediately
south of Killarney.
Parks and Recreation
There are plenty of parks and open spaces in Killarney, Calgary. Furthermore, there are a variety of athletic facilities in the area. There are two golf
courses, one of which is located on the north edge of the community and another which is located on the south edge of the community.
At the northwest end of Killarney is Edworthy Park, a year-round destination with a playground, picnic sites, pathways, and gardens. Residents can also
access the Bow River recreational pathway system via Edworthy Park. There’s also a long toboggan hill and mountain bike trails located within Killarney.
At Optimist Park on Sarcee Trail, there’s an indoor ice arena, and on 29th Street at 17th Avenue, there’s an indoor pool.
