McKenzie Lake, Calgary is a well-known, suburban neighborhood located in the southeast sector of the city. Development of this beautiful community began in the mid-1980s. McKenzie Lake is well known for the private, man-made lake and island that are located in the centre of the community. There are several multi-million dollar mansions in McKenzie Lake, which is one of the more affluent communities in Calgary. With a population of around 14,815, McKenzie Lake is also one of Calgary’s largest neighborhoods.

The original community of McKenzie was built in 1984, south of Stonegate. By the mid-1990s, however, McKenzie Lake developed as an extension of the original community. An artificial lake was built in the area because of the popularity of such amenities in other Calgary neighborhoods, such as Lake Bonavista. In 1997, the original McKenzie and McKenzie Lake were unified when the community of Legacy Ridge was built on a belt of agricultural land that separated the two communities.


McKenzie Lake, Calgary is bounded by Deerfoot Trail to the east, Highway 22X (Marquis de Lorne Trail) to the south, Fish Creek Provincial Park to the west, and 130th Avenue SE to the north. McKenzie Lake residents can access the city’s airport and the downtown area with ease via Deerfoot Trail.

Real Estate

McKenzie Lake, Calgary is a well-to-do community, but offers homes to suit a wide range of budgets. The neighborhood has a home ownership rate of over 93%. Real estate in McKenzie Lake ranges in price from $275,000 to $2.5 million. Most of the housing in the area consists of single family detached homes. Homes in McKenzie Lake offer excellent views of the Rockies and the downtown area.


McKenzie Lake, Calgary is served by both public and separate schools, including McKenzie Lake Elementary, Mountain Park Middle, and Cardinal Newman. There are small commercial developments in the community, as well as several shops and a fitness facility on 130th Avenue.

Parks and Recreation

Recreational opportunities in McKenzie Lake, Calgary abound and revolve around the lake, which is ideal for activities like fishing, swimming, and boating. The McKenzie Lake Residents Association is responsible for maintaining the lake. The association also offers preschool and afterschool programs. Special events that are held in McKenzie Lake on an annual basis include Jellybean dances, New Year’s parties, and Christmas parties. Recreational facilities located in the community include an outdoor skating/hockey rink, sports fields, and a community centre with meeting rooms, a gymnasium, and a kitchen.
