Established in 1912, Millican-Odgen, Calgary is one of the oldest communities in the city. Located in the southeast sector of Calgary, Millican-Odgen was named after the Millican family, which settled in the area in the early 1900s, and I.G. Odgen, the former vice president of the Canada Pacific Railway. The Millican-Odgen area also includes the neighborhood of Lynnwood. Nearly 9,000 people call the area home.

Location

Millican-Odgen, Calgary is bounded by the Canadian National Railway to the north and east, Glenmore Trail to the south, and Deerfoot Trail and Bow River to the west. Located along the western escarpment of Bow River, the Millican-Odgen area offers wonderful views of downtown Calgary and the mountains. Most of the green space and parks in the community are located in Lynnwood, which takes up the southwestern corner of the community.

Real Estate

Most of the housing in Millican-Odgen, Calgary consists of single family homes. The neighborhood has a home ownership rate of over 66%. Due to Millican-Odgen’s long history, the community features several vintage homes. The historic Odgen Hotel is also located in the neighborhood.

The Millican-Odgen, Calgary area is home to several restaurants, strip malls, and churches. There are both public and separate schools in the area, including Banting & Best Elementary, St. Bernadette Elementary, and Sherwood Community School. Millican-Odgen is well-connected to major roadways and therefore offers convenient access to other parts of the city.

Millican-Odgen, Calgary also has its own Family Resource Centre, which provides parenting classes, playgroups, job search support, computer skills training, an emergency food bank, and a toy lending library. The community also offers transitional housing to help homeless families. Overall, Millican- Odgen is a vibrant community with caring members who strive to improve the standard of living of all residents.

Parks and Recreation

Recreational areas near Millican-Odgen include the Beaver Dam Flats, Pop Davies Athletic Park, and the Bow River recreational pathway system. Within the neighborhood, there’s a community centre with an outdoor pool and arena. Activities offered at the community centre include public skating, teen swim, and Jelly Bean dances. The main hall and sports & event lounge at the community centre are available for private rental.

Millican-Odgen, Calgary is served by the Millican-Odgen Community Association, which is made up of dedicated volunteers. Fun events that the association puts together on a yearly basis include Community Days, Winterfest, and Canada Day celebrations.
