Mission, Calgary is an inner-city neighborhood located in the southwest sector of the city, near the downtown area. It has a population of around 4,433 people. Mission is famous for hosting the St. Lilac Festival each May, as well as being home to bustling 4th Street, which features several trendy shops and restaurants.

The Mission district has a rich history. The neighborhood was founded in 1975 by French-Canadian priests and originated as Notre Dame de la Paix, a Catholic Mission. The area was also incorporated as the Village of Rouleauville for some time. Although the founders of the community tried to preserve the neighborhood’s French character, it became overwhelmingly English over time.


The historic neighborhood of Mission, Calgary is bordered by Elbow River to the south and is located east of 4th Street. The Mission has a large population of younger residents. It is a popular place for young professionals to live because of its proximity to the downtown area. Many people who work downtown and live in the Mission walk to work.

Real Estate

Mission, Calgary is mostly comprised of condominiums and townhomes. In fact, there are 1,650 condo units in the Mission. Some older, single family homes remain in the Mission, but there are only 76 of them. Condos in the Mission sell for an average of $262,500, while single family homes in the area sell for an average of $289,141. The majority of residents in the Mission are renters.


Mission, Calgary is a great place to live because of its proximity to a variety of shops, bars, and restaurants. 4th Street, aka Calgary’s Restaurant Row, is a popular hangout because it is home to many trendy restaurants and cafés. There are also many entertainment venues located along 1st Street and 17th Avenue. Furthermore, the Mission is only walking distance away from the amenities in the downtown area.

Parks and Recreation

Mission, Calgary residents are only minutes away from the Beltline Fitness Centre, which features fitness facilities and an indoor pool. Nearby Talisman Centre is a great place for swimming, indoor track, racquet sports, and weights. In addition, residents of the Mission have quick access to the recreational pathways along the Elbow and Bow Rivers.

Mission, Calgary is served by the Cliff Bungalow-Mission Community Association. The association organizes a variety of programs for residents, including a community garden. The association also guides development in the area by ensuring that it remains low-density and restricting buildings over three stories high from being built.
