Montgomery, Calgary is situated on land that was purchased by James Shouldice in 1906. In 1910, Shouldice donated 100 acres of the land to the City of Calgary for park space. That parcel of land, which is located along the Bow River, now makes up Shouldice Athletic Park.

Eventually, a community developed on Shouldice’s land and came to be known as Shouldice Terrace. Problems developed at the post office, however, because the community’s name was similar to the name of another community in Calgary called Shouldice. The Shouldice Family renamed the area Montgomery after being requested to change the name. They named the area after Bernard Law Montgomery of Alamein, a celebrated military leader from Great Britain who played a prominent role in WWI and WWII.
