The beautiful, historic community of Mount Royal, Calgary is located in the southwest quadrant of the city, directly south of the downtown area. Mount
Royal is one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the city. Some of the Calgary’s most expensive executive estates can be found there. Mount Royal is
home to two neighborhoods: Upper Mount Royal and Lower Mount Royal. Upper Mount Royal has a population of 2,613, and Lower Mount Royal has a
population of 3,288.
In the early 1900s, the CPR promoted Mount Royal as an exclusive neighborhood for wealthy citizens. At the time, it was home to many wealthy
American businessmen and thus earned the name, “American Hill.” Up to this day, nearly 30% of the population is made up of American immigrants.
Mount Royal was named after a community in Montreal that was home to the former president of the CPR, William E. Van Horne.
Mount Royal, Calgary is bounded by 17th Avenue to the north; College Lane, Royal Avenue, and Hope Street to the east; 10th Street, Premier Way, and
8th Street to the south; and 14th Street to the west. Upper Mount Royal and Lower Mount Royal are separated by an escarpment that runs along
Cameron and Royal Avenues in an east-west direction. Mount Royal, Calgary is situated on a hill that’s directly south of the downtown area, so the
homes there offer beautiful views of the city, as well as the Bow and Elbow Valleys.
Upper Mount Royal boasts mostly elite single family homes that are up to 100 years old, while the majority of housing in Mount Royal is made up of
condominiums and apartments. Upper Mount Royal is an upscale neighborhood, and Lower Mount Royal has more low-income residents. Lower Mount
Royal is closely associated with the Beltline community.
Mount Royal, Calgary boasts quiet, tree-lined streets. The neighborhood’s mature trees provide shade and privacy throughout the summer months.
Mount Royal is a popular place to live because of its beautiful surroundings and the ample amount of green space it offers.
Mount Royal, Calgary is located just minutes away from the Elbow River and its extensive recreational pathway system. The community is served by Earl
Grey Elementary and Mount Royal Junior High. Contrary to popular belief, Calgary’s Mount Royal University is not located in Mount Royal.
Mount Royal, Calgary is served by the Mount Royal Community Association. Community programs organized by the association include sports and
childcare. The neighborhood also boasts its own outdoor skating rink and sports/playfields.
