Renfrew

Renfrew, Calgary is a residential neighborhood located in the northeast quadrant of the city. Renfrew is an inner-city community, but there are no major commercial or industrial facilities in the area.

Calgary’s downtown core is just three kilometres away from Renfrew, which was established in the 1940s after the Calgary Airport relocated from its original site to the corner of 6th Street and Regal Crescent. In the 1950s, many war vets lived in the area. Today, Renfrew is home to approximately 5,629 people.

Location

Renfrew, Calgary is located south of the Trans-Canada Highway and north of Bridgeland, an inner-city community. Renfrew is bordered by Edmonton Trail to the west, Nose Creek Valley to the east, the Trans-Canada Highway to the north, and the Bow River escarpment to the south. Banff can be easily reached via the Trans-Canada Highway west, while downtown Calgary can be reached via Edmonton Trail.

Real Estate

Approximately 41% of the housing in Renfrew is used for renting. Nearly 40% of the buildings in the area are condominiums or apartments. The Renfrew area also encompasses the neighborhood of Regal Terrace, which is located further up the Edmonton Trail hill. Homes in Regal Terrace boast stunning views of the Bow River Valley and southeast Calgary.

Amenities

The Renfrew area is loaded with amenities. There are several major schools located in the neighborhood, including Colonel Macleod Elementary & Junior High, Renfrew Elementary, and St. Alphonsus Elementary & Junior High. There are several commercial zones located in close proximity to Renfrew, including the shops on Centre Street and Edmonton Trail. There are also several convenience stores situated in the western portion of Renfrew.

Parks and Recreation

Renfrew, Calgary is home to Renfrew Athletic Park, which features two soccer fields, a softball diamond, and a playground. Other recreational facilities in the community include a swimming pool, indoor skating rink, outdoor skating rink, and the Boys & Girls Club. Many of the children living in Renfrew are involved in community sports programs, such as soccer, figure skating, baseball, and hockey. Club activities offered in the community include Teen Club, Brownies, Jelly Bean Dances, Pathfinders, and Mom & Tots. There are also many activities organized for adults in Renfrew, including socials, pub night, floor curling, cards, and bingo night.

Homes in Renfrew, Calgary are situated near the Bow River and Nose Creek recreational pathway systems, which connect to other parts of the city, including the downtown area and Princes Island Park. The Calgary Zoo and Prehistoric Park, which is located on St. Georges Island, is also easily accessible to residents of Renfrew.
