Shawnessy, Calgary is a suburban residential neighborhood located deep in the southwest quadrant of the city, south of Fish Creek. The neighborhood,
which was established in 1981, has its own shopping centre and is conveniently located near public transportation. Approximately 9,500 people call
Shawnessy is named after Samuel Shaw, a British settler who built a barn in the area in 1882. Today, the barn houses the neighborhood’s community
Shawnessy, Calgary is bounded by Shawnessy Boulevard to the north, Macleod Trail to the east, 162nd Avenue S to the south, and 14th Street to the
west. The neighborhood is located immediately south of the community of Millrise and north of the community of Somerset.
Shawnessy residents can directly access the downtown area or leave the city via Macleod Trail. The community is also served by the C-Train LRT system’s
Shawnessy, Calgary is made up of mostly single family homes that were built in the 1980s. There are 2,700 single family detached homes in the
neighborhood, as well as 543 low-rise condos and townhomes. Many of the homes in Shawnessy are surrounded by mature trees and are located on
quiet streets. Real estate in Shawnessy sells for mid-range prices. The neighborhood has a home ownership rate of over 94%.
Shawnessy, Calgary is served by Father Doucet Elementary, Janet Johnstone Elementary, and Samuel L. Shaw Middle Schools. The Shawnessy Town
Centre, which is a shopping centre located on the eastern edge of the community, is a major shopping destination in the area. It is home to several of
Canada’s larger stores, including Co-op, Safeway, Canadian Tire, Winners, Real Canadian Superstore, and many others.
Parks and Recreation
Shawnessy, Calgary is surrounded by natural areas that boast an abundance of year-round recreational opportunities. For example, Fish Creek Provincial
Park is a nearby urban park where popular activities include wildlife viewing, walking/hiking, picnicking, tobogganing, cross-country skiing, fishing, and
swimming. The park is also home to a man-made lake called Sikome Lake, which has a beach that’s perfect for wading and swimming in the
Shawnessy Community Centre is located within 17-acre Shannon Park, which features biking/walking paths, tennis courts, ball diamonds, playgrounds,
and soccer fields. There’s also a rink in the area where residents can enjoy hockey and ice skating in the winter and basketball and rollerblading in the
summer. Also nearby are the Spruce Meadows Equestrian Facility and Shawnee Slopes Golf Course.
