Southwood, Calgary is a community in the southeast sector of the city. Established in 1959, Southwood is primarily made up of single family homes.
Because of the easy access it offers to the downtown area and other parts of the city, it’s a convenient place to call home. Southwood’s also located near
the LRT system and has a population of around 6,200. In addition, Southwood is located near great shopping venues and recreational areas.
Southwood, Calgary is bounded by Southland Drive to the north, Macleod Trail to the east, Anderson Road to the south, 14th Street to the west. The
community of Haysboro is to the north, Willow Park is to the east, Braeside is to the west, and Canyon Meadows is to the south.
Southwood, Calgary features 1,600 single family homes, with prices starting in the low $300,000s. There are also 600 condos in the area, with prices
starting at under $200,000. Southwood has a home ownership rate of over 57%. Most of the real estate in the community was built between the 1950s
and the 1970s.
Southwood, Calgary is served by Ethel M. Johnson Elementary, Harold Panabaker Junior High, and Foundations for the Future Elementary, which are
public schools, and St. Stephen Elementary & Junior High, which is a Catholic school. Southwood’s residents can enjoy great shopping and dining on
Macleod Trail, as well as at nearby Willow Park Shopping Centre and Southcentre Mall. Southwood is also located near Rockyview Hospital, as well as the
LRT stations on the south “Anderson” leg.
Parks and Recreation
Many people, particularly families, choose to live in Southwood, Calgary because of its proximity to Fish Creek Provincial Park and the Glenmore
Reservoir, both of which offer an array of recreational opportunities. There’s also plenty of green space and numerous parks located within the
community. In addition, Southwood is home to an outdoor skating rink, hockey rink, and sports/playfields.
The Calgary Golf & Country Club is accessible from Elbow Drive in the north. Other recreational venues in the area include an indoor ice arena on
Heritage Drive and a waterslide park beside Macleod Trail. Additionally, there is a sailing club on the east shore and south shore of the Glenmore
Reservoir, Heritage Park is located just west of 14th Street, the Trico Centre for Family Wellness is located to the east, and the Southland Leisure Centre
is situated to the west.
Southwood, Calgary is served by the Southwood Community Association, which has an active presence in the neighborhood. Activities and programs that
the association organizes include a playgroup, scrapbooking meetings, yoga classes, defensive arts training, Girl Guides, and Junior Forest Wardens.
