Sunnyside, Calgary is a sought-after neighborhood in one of the oldest districts in the city’s northwest sector. Sunnyside dates back to the late 1800s, when homesteaders settled in the area. Together with the neighboring community of Hillhurst, Sunnyside is part of the Kensington district, a hip area that’s well-known for its boutique shops and cafes. Sunnyside is an inner-city community that’s northwest of and across from the Bow River. Many urban professionals and their families live in Sunnyside because it has a quiet atmosphere, yet it is only a 10-minute walk away from the bustling downtown area.


Sunnyside, Calgary is adjacent to the downtown area and located on the north side of the Bow River. The neighborhood is bounded by 8th Avenue, 14th Street, and 16th Avenue to the north; 10th Street, the escarpment south of Crescent Road and Centre Street to the east; the Bow River to the south; and 18th Street to the west. The land where Sunnyside is situated was purchased by the City of Calgary and incorporated into the city in 1904.

Real Estate

Sunnyside, Calgary used to be a working-class neighborhood where employees of the Canadian Pacific Railway and Eau Claire Sawmill resided. Nowadays, Sunnyside is a popular neighborhood for urban professionals and their families. There is a diverse mix of housing in the neighborhood, including small bungalows that date back to the first half of the 20th century, townhouses, trendy condos, and new, low-rise apartments. Prices for low- rise condos start in the low-mid $100,000s, while upscale homes typically cost over $600,000.


Sunnyside, Calgary is located in the Kensington district, which is home to trendy shops and cafes. It is a vibrant area that offers endless opportunities for shopping and recreation. Despite the significant commercial development that Sunnyside has undergone over the years, it retains a quaint, historic vibe.

Sunnyside is located on the C-Train line. There are also many schools near Sunnyside, including Sunnyside Community School, Hillhurst Community School, and Queen Elizabeth Junior & Senior High.

Parks and Recreation

Sunnyside, Calgary is served by the Hillhurst-Sunnyside Community Association, which provides diverse programming for residents. Community programs geared towards children include year-round daycare and cooking classes. The association also organizes a collective kitchen program, a bowling club, and a community outreach program for seniors.

Recreational facilities located in the community include the ball diamonds, soccer pitches, and tennis courts in Hillhurst Athletic Park. Other recreational venues in Sunnyside, Calgary include Riley Park and the riverside recreational pathways. The neighborhood’s community association also has its own gymnasium, where indoor soccer matches take place during the winter.
