Whitehorn, Calgary is a residential community located in the northeast quadrant of the city. The area was annexed by the city in 1961, but it wasn’t
established as a neighborhood until 1973. Whitehorn has a population of nearly 12,000 and is one of the city’s most ethnically diverse communities. It
has large Chinese, Vietnamese, and East Indian populations.
Whitehorn, Calgary is well connected to major roadways, allowing for convenient commutes to other parts of the city. Furthermore, Whitehorn is served
by Whitehorn Station of the C-Train LRT system. It is bounded by McKnight Boulevard to the north, 52nd Street E to the east, 32nd Avenue N to the
south, and 36th Street E to the west.
Whitehorn, Calgary is primarily a low-density residential area that offers a mix of single family homes, low-rise apartments, and townhomes.
Approximately 77% of the population in Whitehorn is made up of homeowners. The homes in Whitehorn are well connected to recreational pathways that
are used for walking and cycling.
Whitehorn, Calgary is served by Anne Gale Junior High, Colonel J. Fred Scott Elementary, Chief Justice Milvain Elementary, and St. Wilfrid Elementary.
The closest movie theatres are located at London Town Square and Marlborough Mall. Many restaurants can be found along 32nd Avenue, which is
located east of 36th Street NE. 36th Street is also home to many shops, entertainment, and recreational venues. In addition, a large hospital called the
Peter Lougheed Centre is located to the southwest of Whitehorn.
Parks and Recreation
Whitehorn, Calgary is home to several large parks. Recreational facilities located near Whitehorn include the city-owned McCall Lake Golf Course, which
is west on 32nd Avenue and just before Deerfoot Trail. Also nearby is Prairie Winds Park, which is located to the north of the community and features an
outdoor pool and several other amenities. In addition, Village Square Leisure Centre, which features a wave pool and more, is located just south of
Whitehorn. Calgary’s bike path system is also nearby.
Whitehorn, Calgary is served by the Whitehorn Community Association, which offers a variety of programs that cater to its diverse population.
Whitehorn’s community centre serves as a gathering place for the Immigrant Women’s Association, Muslim groups, the East Indian Dholma Garaba
Dance Troupe, and the Ismali 250th Scout Troop. Other activities hosted at Whitehorn’s community centre include Girl Guides, Boy Scouts, craft fairs,
karate classes, and dance classes. Whitehorn is also home to pleasure rinks and community hockey rinks.
